More Choices, No Decisions

I was able to avoid a decision for my advisor about my future, but then today I was asked if I would consider working part-time as a Research Assistant until they are able to hire a permanent full-time employee in mid-July. Taking this on gives me a crazy month as I still am a Graduate Assistant at the Dairy and a Student Assistant in HR until the end of June, but gives me one possibility of full-time employment if I choose to stay on the Central Coast. Giving me more choices, I saw beautiful old homes in the New England area in an article on www.msn.com and so did a search on monster.com for any positions in the area. There were many positions and I found one that I liked and am qualified for at Bristol-Myers Squibb in Connecticut as a Research Scientist in the field of In Vivo Pharmacology. This has tempted me with more choices and not really leading me closer to a decision.

Eek! I don't even know what Vivo Pharmacology is. Personally, I thought grad school was too expensive, but I was worried I would regret not getting an advanced degree. Is there a possibility that you could get a grant for the PhD or work for a company and do the PhD part-time (can you even do a PhD part-time)? I'm definitely not ready to choose one career or another, so I decided to go back to school to keep my options open. Good luck on the decision!

Thanks for the advice. Technically I am funded right now and would be in my PhD work, so the cost wouldn't be that great. My biggest concern is that I don't want to work on something for 5 years, giving up earning potential, and then not even use the degree. I am curious to see if I would be satisfied working in a lab environment with only a masters, or would I always be envious of the projects PhD's work on. Right now I am thinking of working for a couple of years and then deciding if I want to enter a PhD program. Where I will work is another problem I think I will figure out at a later date.
BTW - beautiful dresses you were looking at! How is the planning coming?
